PMDD vs PMS: what is the difference?

PMS and PMDD can involve some of the same physical and emotional symptoms, but they are not the same thing. One of the main differences is the severity of symptoms and how much they affect everyday life.

What is PMS?

PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, describes physical and emotional symptoms that occur in relation to the menstrual cycle, often during the days before a period.

People may experience things such as mood changes, irritability, bloating, fatigue, cravings, headaches, or changes in sleep.

What is PMDD?

PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, involves more severe cyclical symptoms that can significantly affect daily functioning, relationships, work, school, or other parts of life.

Because PMS and PMDD can share symptoms, looking at timing, severity, and how symptoms change across multiple cycles can be useful.
